"...Everyone's a part of the family -- until they're not"

Inspired by Anton Chekov's classic play The Cherry Orchard, this new work by local playwright Dorothy Fortenberry juxtaposes Mexican folk tales with contemporary rural life at a family-owned Mendocino County winery. When money troubles threaten the estate, the aging hippie owner, his two daughters, and the Mexican mother and son who live and work with them must face the long-ignored complications of their relationships to the land and to each other. Touching on class, land, power, immigration, wealth and its disappearance with a nuanced and comic view of liberal political culture and attitudes, borders dissolve, generations clash, and the story of a family reflects the fortunes of the nation. This reading is directed by Becca Wolf.

Species Native to California was developed during a residency at Old Growth Arts in Sonoma County, and was read as part of the Youngblood New Blood series in NYC and recently at Theatricum Botanicum as part of their GreenRead series. Special thanks to Jennie Webb. Presented in association with Tilted Field Productions.
